What is Sepak Takraw?


Modern Sepak Takraw, or Takraw for short (also known as Kick Volleyball), began in Malaysia and is now their national sport. It combines elements of Soccer, Footbag, Volleyball, Baseball, Badminton, Gymnastics and the ancient sport of Sepak Raga.

Significant Milestones in Sepak Takraw

 

1945 - Sepakraga Jaring (Sepak Raga Net) exhibition is held in Penang, Malaysia. Modern Sepak Takraw is born.

1960 - Rules & Regulations are standardized and the official name of the sport becomes Sepak Takraw.

1965 - Sepak Takraw becomes a medal event in the Southeast Asian Peninsula (SEAP) Games.

1982 - Sepak Takraw is a Demonstration Sport in the 8th Asian Games in New Delhi, India.

1984 - The 1st King's Cup Sepak Takraw Championship is held in Bangkok, Thailand.

1988 - ASTAF forms ISTAF as the world governing body for Sepak Takraw.

1990 - Sepak Takraw becomes a medal event in the 10th Asian Games in Beijing, China.

1997 - ISTAF gains admission to GAISF, the General Association of International Sports Federations.

1998 - Bogotá Columbia hosts EXPO SPORT, in which Sepak Takraw is featured with North American teams.

1998 - Sepak Takraw is a demonstration event at the XVI Commonwealth Games in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

1998 - The Circle Game is included as a medal event in the 13th Asian Games in Bangkok, Thailand.

1998 - Canada becomes the first western country to embrace Sepak Takraw as an official sport under its National Olympic Committee – begins developing instructional   videos & printed materials for world-wide promotions.

1999 - Canada hosts the first annual Canadian Open Sepak Takraw Championships.

2000 - The International Olympic Committee (IOC) watches demonstration matches during a visit to Thailand.

2001 - The 1st professional Sepak Takraw League is established and gets under way in Thailand.

2003 - European Associations and Clubs form the Federation of European Sepak Takraw Associations (FESTA).

2004 - “Circle” is replaced by “Doubles” and “Hoop” Sepak Takraw as medal events in the King’s Cup in Thailand.

2005 - Sepak Takraw is demonstrated at the Canadian Olympic Committee AGM and at the Canada Summer Games.

2007 - Gajah Emas sponsors a huge Indonesia “Beach” Sepak Takraw tournament, with 1000 players on 150 courts.

2007 - The Sepak Takraw Association of Canada partners with the Malaysian Sepak Takraw Association and the Malaysian Ministry of Sports to bring 2 Malaysian Regus to Canada for a 2-week cross-country demonstration tour.

2008 - Malaysian Airlines partners with Gajah Emas to bring their Regus & Equipment to participate in major tournaments in Canada and Europe, creating more excitement for Sepak Takraw in the newer playing western countries.

2009 - Canada competes in the French Open International Sepak Takraw Tournament and make it to the quarter-final, where they lost out to Germany.

2011 - Two Regus from the China Sepak Takraw Federation participate in the 2011 Canadian Open Sepak Takraw Championships held in Regina, SK, where the event took place under a 150 ft. long X 80 ft. wide tent on the beautifully groomed grass of Wascana Park.

2011 - ISTAF Super Series kicks off across Southeast Asia, offering a series of annual tournaments for the sport’s elite to compete in.
